Knights Close Out Ty Cobb Classic at 2-1

Written by Chris Pendleton

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.—After winning both of its games on Friday at the Ty Cobb Classic hosted by Hampden-Sydney College, the Southern Virginia University baseball team lost its final game of the event on Saturday to Stevenson University 7-1, closing out the classic at 2-1.

Southern Virginia (2-2) never got going offensively against Stevenson (2-2)—the Knights scored their only run of the day in the top of the ninth on a Mitch Stevenson (Muskogee, Okla.) sacrifice fly allowing Tyler Cox (Forest, Miss.), who tripled to lead off the inning, to score from third.

Trager Hintze (St. George, Utah) was the only Knight to record multiple hits against Stevenson as the senior went 2-for-3 from the plate one day after going 4-for-5 against host-school Hampden-Sydney in a 7-3 win.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Jordan Stailey (Silver City, N.M.) was a bright spot for the Knights in the loss giving up only one hit and no runs in two innings of relief. Fellow freshman lefty Justin King (San Ramon, Calif.) picked up the loss in his first start of the season allowing seven hits and five runs in three-and-two-thirds innings of work.

Baseball has three days off before facing its fifth consecutive NCAA Division III school on Wednesday, Feb. 22 when the Knights travel to Lynchburg College for a nine-inning game beginning at 2 p.m. EDT.
