Randolph Takes Two From Knights

Written by Chris Pendleton

LYNCHBURG, Va.—The Southern Virginia University softball team lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Randolph College falling 0-8 in Game One (five innings) followed by a 5-2 defeat in Game Two.

Southern Virginia (0-4) struggled offensively at Randolph (4-0) recording only six combined hits in two games against the Wildcats, none of which were for extra bases.

Randolph's Jessica Sanabria earned her second win of the young season in Game One allowing only two hits in five scoreless innings on the mound.

Meanwhile Randolph's offense scored eight runs—seven earned—on nine hits against Southern Virginia's sophomore pitcher McKenzy MacKay (Kaysville, Utah), who moved to 0-2 this year. MacKay struggled with her control in her second start of the season walking four Wildcats, while hitting three more.

Freshmen Sarah Edwards (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Seneca Hartzel (Coolidge, Ariz.) were the only Knights to record hits against Sanabria.

Senior Amanda Otto (Cypress, Texas) took the mound for Southern Virginia in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader holding Randolph scoreless through four innings, while the Knights took their only lead of the afternoon after a throwing miscue by the Wildcats allowed two unearned runs in the bottom of the third.

Randolph responded with three runs in the top of the fifth and two more insurance runs in the sixth to sweep the afternoon from the Knights.

Freshman Kelsey Benson (Providence, Utah) went 2-for-3 during Game Two, while Edwards tallied her second hit of the day and recorded the Knights' only RBI of the doubleheader.

Saturday's games against Randolph were originally scheduled to be played at Southern Virginia's home field, but were moved to Lynchburg, Va., because of unfavorable weather conditions in Buena Vista.

Softball has one day off before hosting Davis & Elkins College on Monday, Feb. 27 for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. EDT.
