FREDERICKSBURG, Va.—Behind 5.1 innings of shutout ball by senior starting pitcher Ed Greenhalgh (Roy, Utah), the Southern Virginia University baseball team won the opener 4-2 and dropped the second contest in a tight 6-5 battle in the 12th inning at future CAC-opponent the University of Mary Washington.

"We played well defensively and Ed [Greenhalgh] threw a gem in the first game," said fourth-year Head Coach Logan Mann. "I credit our players for never giving up and taking the next one to extra innings. We just came up short in a competitive ballgame." 

Left-hander Greenhalgh moved to 2-1 on the year, holding Mary Washington (6-4) scoreless logging 5.1 innings of four-strikeout, three-hit ball on the mound while junior shortstop Mitch Stevenson (Muskogee, Okla.), who leads the team with a .548 batting average so far, hit in the go-ahead runs on a double to center field in the top of the fourth inning in the Southern Virginia (8-5) game-one victory. 

The Knights led off with the first crooked number on the scoreboard as junior first baseman Josh Linn (Muskogee, Okla.) hit in teammate Tyler Cox (Forest, Miss.) on a single to left field in the top of the first. 

After two innings in which neither side scored, Southern Virginia ended the silence with Stevenson's two-RBI double in the fourth in addition to an RBI-single to right-center by sophomore second baseman CJ Andrus (Federal Way, Wash.)—who recorded a 2-for-3 appearance at the dish—knocking in senior outfielder Dale Brown (Mesa, Ariz.). 

The Eagles cut into the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a double from Seth Jordan and single from Jono Haught; however, Mary Washington's rally was not enough as Knights freshman Jonathan Hodges (Cleveland, Tenn.) registered his first save of 2013 recording the final out on a fly ball to right field in his 1.2 innings of relief work. 

Freshman right fielder Tyler Clark (Idaho Falls, Idaho)—who had four hits on the day—contributed going 2-for-3 on singles to left field and through the infield on route to the win. 

Eagles starter Torey Mancari (1-2) was given the loss in the decision allowing three runs, two hits and two walks while striking out six batters in 4.0 innings. 

In game two, in which ten combined pitchers were used from both squads, Mary Washington came away with the 6-5 win in the bottom of the 12th inning when Haught tripled to center field and then crossed home plate for the game-winner on an error. 

Southern Virginia again jumped ahead with an early 4-1 lead through three complete as senior first baseman Trager Hintze (Purcell, Okla.) touched home in the top of the first while Stevenson scored runs in the first and third innings. 

An RBI-single from senior catcher Barrett Price (Georgetown, S.C.) scored teammate junior Giovanni Prado (West Valley City, Utah) for the fourth run top of the third, giving the Knights the three-run lead. 

The Eagles evened the score (4-4) as Alex Bryant, Sam Kostyack and Brendan Jones recorded runs in the fourth inning before taking the lead in the bottom of the sixth on Jones' singled to left-center to bring in teammate Cretney. 

Southern Virginia's Prado, who finished 2-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI, tied the game 5-5 in the top of the sixth, bringing in Clark on a line drive single to center field sending the game to extra innings prior to Mary Washington's 12th-inning run. 

Price added two hits in the win while Hintze, Prado and Stevenson each recorded a double respectively.  

Eagles' Bernard Mayflower (1-0) earned the win throwing 6.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits while Southern Virginia freshman Austin Douglas (Howell, Mich.) took the loss although he threw 5.2 successful innings of relief of two-hit ball.  

Baseball returns home on Saturday, March 9, after an eight-game road swing to face USCAA-foe Pennsylvania College of Technology.
