Box Score

SALEM, Va.—Despite recording 10 hits in the contest, the Southern Virginia University baseball team dropped Thursday night's game 5-2 at Roanoke College.

"We hit the ball well and had quality approaches at the plate tonight," said fourth-year Head Coach Logan Mann. "Unfortunately, the ball didn't fall our way even though our team played a solid game."

At Kiwanis Park, Roanoke (14-18) scored the first run of the evening in the second inning for the early lead over Southern Virginia (17-12) as Boonewell Hagy hit a sacrifice fly to center field to send home teammate Clark Crutchfield.

The Maroons then proceeded to add two more in the bottom of the fourth as Andrew Peterson hit an RBI-double to left field before later touching home plate on Hagy's single through the outstretched arms of the middle infielders.

In the top of the sixth inning, senior third baseman Tyler Cox (Forest, Miss.), who finished 2-for-4 at the dish, put the Knights on the scoreboard singling home junior shortstop Mitch Stevenson (Muskogee, Okla.).

One at-bat later, senior first baseman Trager Hintze (Purcell, Okla.) scored Cox by crushing a double to center field to bring Southern Virginia within one at a 3-2 deficit.

Two insurance runs were tacked on by Roanoke in the bottom of the seventh, however, on a Bradley Mattox sacrifice fly to send Hagy home along with a run scored by Gavin Pellitteri on route to the three-run win.

Each of the Knights' one through four batters in the lineup—senior Dale Brown (Mesa, Ariz.), freshman Tyler Clark (Idaho Falls, Idaho), Cox and Stevenson—recorded two hit apiece respectively.

Four of Southern Virginia's six baserunners left on-base were stranded in scoring position.

The Maroons' starting pitcher Tim Demshar (1-0) earned the win, throwing a perfect four innings with three strikeouts. Senior left-hander Tyler King (San Ramon, Calif.) moved to 2-2 on the year in the loss despite throwing 5.0 solid innings while striking out two batters and allowing three runs—one earned run—on eight hits.

Baseball takes a day off before taking on its second consecutive ODAC-opponent Guilford College in a twin bill on Sat., Apr. 13.
