Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va.—After falling to Randolph College in five sets at home two weeks ago, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team didn't hesitate to exact revenge by defeating the WildCats by a 3-0 tally (25-20, 25-10, 25-22) on the road Thursday night at the RAD Center in Lynchburg, Virginia.
The Knights (13-6) were led by freshman Vanessa Pawlak's 13 kills on the night while senior Kaitlyn Eaton and freshman Hannah Phillips earned respective 10 and 11 kill totals. Katelynn Tlustek aided the attack with 27 assists for the evening while McKenna Koster contributed four service aces.
Defensively, sophomore April Bennett logged 14 digs while Melissa Owen and Eaton teamed up to earn nine block assists during the match. Freshman Calyn Barry had six digs and three block assists.
"I was impressed with how we came out with energy and were driven to put the game away quickly," said Southern Virginia head coach Brittney Lee. "Having played a game in eastern Maryland last night, I was happy the girls had it in them to attack and be aggressive.
"Each girl did her part and we played well as a team. We looked at film from our last game and saw that we lost mostly because we had so many errors. We eliminated those tonight and came away with the win."
Down 3-0 quickly in the opening set, the Knights rattled off seven straight points and gradually built a 10-5 lead. A Pawlak kill began a five-point rally to go up 15-6. The WildCats caught up to trail 16-14 midway through, but an Eaton kill ignited another Knight run to go up 21 -15 and eventually earn the 25-20 set victory.
The Knights were dominant in the second set, springing to a quick 4-0 lead and gradual 11-2 lead off an Eaton kill and Randolph handling error. A kill by Barry increased the lead to 18-5 and Southern Virginia coasted to an easy 15-10 set victory.
A competitive third set was point-for-point early on as both teams battled to a 16-15 Randolph lead. Pawlak evened the score at 16 with a kill before the WildCats went on a four-point rally to go up 20-16. Unfazed, the Knights fought back with two Pawlak kills to cut the WildCat lead to 20-19 and 20-20 after a Randolph attack error.
Two kills by Southern Virginia's Phillips in the final moments accompanied by a Bennett service ace and Eaton kill lifted the Knights to a 25-22 set victory and 3-0 sweep.
Jordan Templin led the WildCats with 17 kills on the night with Kerry McMichael providing 22 assists.
Southern Virginia will take General Conference weekend off and be well-rested to face a ranked Christopher Newport team next Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Newport News, Virginia.
