Box Score ARLINGTON, Va.—Anxious to get back to its winning ways following last weekend's loss at Salisbury, the Southern Virginia University volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Marymount University Wednesday night at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Virginia.
The win improves the Knights to a 16-8 overall mark and 4-2 league record in the Capital Athletic Conference while the Saints go to 23-7 on the year and 5-1 in conference. Previously without a loss in conference play,Marymount was tied for first in the CAC standings with No. 13 Christopher Newport University.
The Knights have also won 13 of their past 16 matches and surpassed last season's win total of 15 games.
Freshman Vanessa Pawlak led the team with 13 kills on 36 attempts, while senior middle blocker Kaitlyn Eaton contributed 10 kills throughout the four sets. Freshman Calyn Barry was close behind with nine kills for the night.
Junior Katelynn Tlustek led the Knight attack by distributing the ball around, totaling 26 assists while freshman Valerie Arkansas tallied 16 for the night. Tlustek also assisted the attack with a team-high three service aces, while freshman McKenna Koster had two aces in three sets played.
Barry also performed well defensively, accounting for two solo blocks and five block assists while Eaton logged seven block assists.
The Saints' Morgan McAlpin led Marymount with 16 kills while Emileigh Rettig poured in 10 assists.
Southern Virginia returns home to Knight Sports Arena on Saturday with a 3 p.m. tilt with Wesley College to resume conference play.
