BUENA VISTA, Va.—Behind 14 kills from freshman Vanessa Pawlak, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-15, 13-25, 25-20, 25-17) victory over ODAC opponent Lynchburg College Friday evening at Knight Sports Arena in Buena Vista, Virginia.
After falling behind 5-3 early in game one, the Knights outscored Lynchburg by a 22-10 margin the rest of the way to take the first frame with ease.
Game two saw a similar outcome, but in favor of the Hornets. Southern Virginia gained an early 4-3 advantage with the teams remaining relatively even halfway through the second game. After taking a 14-11 lead, the visitors used an 11-2 run to solidify the win and even the match at 1-1.
From then on it was all Southern Virginia as the Knights would take 1-0 leads in both games three and four and would not look back, earning the 3-1 win in four sets.
Pawlak also pitched in 12 digs on the defensive side of the net to go with four blocks—one solo and three assisted. Kaitlyn Eaton, Calyn Barry and Shannon Romito gave the Knights seven kills apiece, with setter Katelynn Tlustek earning a game-high 23 assists on the evening.
Defensively, April Bennett led Southern Virginia with 17 digs and freshman Hannah Phillips gave the home team 11 digs of her own.
Jennifer Garrett led the Hornets with eight kills in the match.
