BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team claimed its first conference win of the season by defeating Penn State Harrisburg, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.
In the first half, the Lions outshot the Knights by a slim 5-4 margin. MaKenzie Cox picked up one save while Harrisburg keeper Makenzie Gates picked up two saves to end the half tied 0-0.
After a scoreless first half, the Knights came out aggressively in the second. After three shot attempts, sophomore Tatiana Monsen was able to net a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead over the Lions.
The Knights were relentless on defense as they worked well with senior goalie MaKenzie Cox to hold the 1-0 lead. The Knights were strong on offense and attacked the box and with less than 10 minutes left on the clock, freshman Jamilla Gambee found her way past the Lion defense for her first goal of the game and final 2-0 score.
Cox picked up a total of four saves for her third shutout of the season. The Lions' goalie Makenzie Gates picked up four saves.
The Knights hit the road Tuesday to continue conference play to face regionally ranked Christopher Newport. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. at POMOCO Stadium in Newport News, Virginia.
