LEXINGTON, Va.—Following a break that lasted nearly three weeks due to postponed or canceled games, the Southern Virginia University baseball team took to the diamond again Tuesday afternoon at Washington & Lee but fell to the host Generals, 4-2, at Smith Field in Lexington, Va.

The clubs played evenly matched baseball for the majority of the game as both committed two errors out in the field and the Knights (0-5) earned six hits to W&L's nine throughout the nine innings. With the Knights up 2-1 through the top of the seventh, the Generals scored three runs between the final two innings to earn the eventual 4-2 win.

"We played pretty well today and gave our best all-around performance to this point of the young season," said Southern Virginia head coach Logan Mann. "We played with energy and we pitched well. We made a few defensive mistakes that cost us in the end, but at the plate we hit more balls and fought until the end."

After two scoreless innings, Southern Virginia struck first in the top of the third. Freshman Hunter Allen singled to shortstop and advanced to second on a throwing error. Allen then advanced to third on a sac bunt by Keenan Johnson. A Mitch Mantle RBI single to right brought in Allen for Southern Virginia's first score and early 1-0 lead. The Knights earned three runs in the inning but left two on base.

In the fourth, a Zach McNally sac bunt advanced Jordan Keefer to second base. With Nick Lyons up to bat, Keefer advanced to third on a throwing error from the W&L shortstop to put Lyons at first. Allen then singled to left to bring in Keefer for an RBI before the Generals earned a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Allen finished the day with two hits on four at-bats and an RBI while McNally earned two hits on three at-bats. On the mound, Chris Madison pitched a total of six innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out four Generals in 21 at-bats. Senior Tyler King pitched 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out one.

Washington & Lee's Riley Stout earned two RBI on two hits out of four at-bats while Luke Myer also had two hits and scored two runs. Andrew Head achieved an RBI and a hit in three at-bats. Kyle Tipping earned the win with four innings pitched as he allowed just one hit and had just one walk.

The Knights next play Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney College. The first pitch is scheduled for noon in Hampden Sydney, Va., and the second game will proceed shortly after the completion of the first.
