Softball Drops Two in Doubleheader at Emory & Henry

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

By Daniel Whitehead

EMORY, Va. –Looking for a strong start to the 2014 season, the Southern Virginia University softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader at Emory & Henry, 9-0, 9-0, Friday evening at Wasps Field in Emory, Va.

Both games were completed in five innings due to the nine-run advantage rule as Southern Virginia could not cut the Wasp lead after four innings.

In the first game, the Knights (0-2) got behind early in the first inning as the Wasps (3-1) earned five hits against Southern Virginia pitcher Sara Harmon.

Emory & Henry went on another scoring run in the bottom of the third inning against Knight pitcher Jamie Pinkston as the Wasps earned four runs on two hits, capitalizing on stolen bases and advancing from wild pitches.

Freshman third baseman Kelsey Bair earned two hits on two at-bats while shortstop Cheyenne Hegsted earned one hit on two at-bats. First baseman Morgan Young was responsible for six put-outs with Hegsted contributing two and assisting another.

The Wasps earned nine runs on 17 at-bats in the first game while registering seven hits and 7 RBI.

Cassandra Pacheco started at pitcher in the second game for the Knights and allowed just one run in the opening inning. Emory & Henry took off in the second inning by scoring seven runs on two hits as Southern Virginia committed two errors and the Wasps took advantage of several hit-by-pitches, passed balls and walks.

Hannah Bays earned a grand slam with bases loaded by sailing a Pacheco pitch over the center field line. Pacheco was replaced by Pinkston in the third inning and the Wasps tallied just one additional run to close the series.

The Knights return to action to host their 2014 home opener Saturday afternoon against Wilson College. The first pitch is scheduled for noon at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.
