Softball Opens CAC with Twinbill Losses to York (Pa.)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUENA VISTA, Va.-The Southern Virginia University softball team was swept, 9-0 and 11-1, by Capital Athletic Conference foe York College in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Harvey-Dryden field.

Jamie Pinkston started off on the rubber for the Knights and after three innings had five hits, six runs and five walks to get pinned with the loss. Freshman Kelsey Bair stepped in the circle for the first time this season and in two innings had no hits, four walks, three runs and recorded two strikeouts.

Cassandra Pacheco started the second game off for the Knights and after nearly two innings the Spartans tallied five hits, seven runs and two walks. Pinkston reentered the circle, had two hits, four runs and three walks to close the game for the Knights.

Offensively, the young Knight squad struggled to string hits and cross the plate as they totaled six hits through two games. At the bottom of the fifth in game one, MaKenzie Cox started the Knights off with a single. Lainie Thompson was unsuccessful at the plate for the first out. Reilly Anderson bunted for a single and moved Cox over to second. McKenzie Packard followed Anderson's lead and bunted her way to first as well. Katie Evans then popped up for the second out. With the bases loaded, Cheyenne Hegsted battled and was walked to bring Cox home for the Knights' first run of the day. Bair grounded out to end the game 9-1.

McKenzie Packard was consistent offensively as she went 3-5 through both games, on two singles in game one and her first collegiate homerun in game two. Bair went 1-2 with a single to right center in the fourth inning of game one, but was left stranded.

The Spartans' pitcher Jennifer Taff tallied eight strikeouts, allowed three hits and no walks throughout her nine innings in the circle. The Spartans recorded 12 hits and capitalized on the Knights' wild pitches to claim both victories over the Knights. Payton Hill had a two run homerun in game one and was 4-5 through both games to improve her batting average.

The Knights stay home for a doubleheader against Davis & Elkins on Monday. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. for a Family Night at Harvey-Dryden Field.
