Men's Lacrosse Falls in League Tilt with Christopher Newport

BUENA VISTA, Va.—In its last conference game of the season, the Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team fell to Christopher Newport, 17-4, Wednesday evening at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.

Southern Virginia (0-15) played solid defense out of the gates, surrendering only one goal during the first ten minutes of play. The Knights trailed 3-1 with 1:30 left in the first quarter before the Captains (10-4) scored three goals in the final minute of the quarter.

The Knights would add two goals in the second quarter, but could not keep pace with Christopher Newport, trailing 11-3 at the break.

Southern Virginia's defense reemerged in the third quarter, limiting the Captains to only two goals. Defender Kai Thomas registered the Knights' final goal after causing a turnover and taking the ball the length of the field for the goal.

Christopher Newport outshot the Knights, 48-28, and won the ground ball battle, 50-25. Jacob Lamb won seven faceoffs for the Knights, and Southern Virginia also cleared the ball on 13 of 15 opportunities.

Freshman Jacob Lamb scored the first goal on the evening for Southern Virginia on a man-up opportunity. Mike Bangerter connected with Garrett Maw for the Knights' first goal of the second quarter, followed by Garrett Maw feeding Cody Pennington for a nice finish after a turnover caused by Josh Neilson.

Tyler Cox started at goalie for the Knights and logged 12 saves on the afternoon, bringing his season total to 169 saves.

The Knights return to action next Saturday in their season finale against Bethany College. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at The Fields.
