Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va.—After a slow start, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team came back to win three straight sets and the match, 22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-11 over host Eastern Mennonite Wednesday night at Yoder Arena in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
The win was the Knights' second straight following the defeat of Mary Baldwin the night before in their home opener. Southern Virginia committed 12 errors in the opening set to lose ground early on and fall by three tallies in the first set.
A closely contested second set was claimed by the Knights by logging 15 kills in the frame with only 10 errors on 50 attack attempts.
Freshman Vanessa Pawlak led the team with 13 kills on the night followed by senior middle blocker Kaitlyn Eaton with 11. Freshmen Hannah Phillips and Calyn Barry also contributed eight kills apiece.
Freshman Valerie Arkansas and junior Katelynn Tlustek took turns distributing the ball as Arkansas finished with a 18 assists while Tlustek earned a team-best 23 for the night. Tlustek also led the team with three service aces.
Defensively, sophomore April Bennett led the team with 25 digs while Phillips and Pawlak each recorded 19. Barry and Eaton led Southern Virginia in block assists with respective totals of five and four to help earn the win.
The Royals' Regan Cook led EMU with 10 kills while Sara Ritchie totaled seven. Jasmine Johnson finished the game with 25 assists to her credit.
Southern Virginia heads to the Maroons Classic this weekend hosted by Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. The Knights will face off again with Mary Baldwin on Friday at 2 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. matchup with Meredith that night.
The Knights also play two games Saturday with matches against Methodist (11 a.m.) and Ferrum (1 p.m.)
