HARRISONBURG, Va.- After a well-fought match and equalizing goals scored just seconds apart in the second half, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team pick up its first loss of the year after giving up a goal in the 106th minute to fall, 2-1, Wednesday evening at Eastern Mennonite.
Sophomore midfielder Carlos Munoz had an unassisted go-ahead goal just 1:39 before the end of regulation to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage, but the lead - scored off of the post on a free kick - would only last 49 seconds. The Royals' David Hooley answered immediately from an assist by Jake Lund to force the game to a sudden-death overtime.
Despite the impressive defensive performance by freshman Anthony Skeeters and eight saves by freshman goalkeeper Colin Flynn, the golden goal would come for Eastern Mennonite (2-1) in the second overtime on an upper corner goal from 20 yards out, giving the Knights their first loss of the 2014 season.
The Royals outshot the Knights 22-13, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Munoz led the Knights with three shots while Erik Gutierrez, Brahema Molubah, and Cole Honeycutt each added two shots.
Both starting forward Josh Smith and CAC Defensive Player of the Week and goalkeeper Efren Gutierrez did not play against EMU due to injury, and hope to be healthy for Friday night's game.
Southern Virginia next faces ODAC preseason No. 1 ODAC selection Virginia Wesleyan. The game will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5th, at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.
