Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va.—Seeking its first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season and first over Christopher Newport University in school history for any sport, the Southern Virginia University men's basketball team accomplished the feat with a 60-59 overtime victory over the visiting Captains Wednesday night at Knight Sports Arena.
Standing at the bottom of the conference standings with an 0-10 mark in the league, the Knights (3-14, 1-10) faced all odds going up against the Captains, who were tied for first in the CAC with Marymount with an 8-2 conference mark and 13-4 overall record.
"I'm proud of our guys that they haven't given up on the season and found a way to win this game," said Southern Virginia head coach Tony Caputo. "We've been through a lot this year and lost a lot of close games to good opponents. We found a way to get it done. Our defensive focus was excellent and our offense played with more patience and avoided live turnovers. This was a great night for our team."
The Captains jumped out to a 13-4 lead over the opening eight minutes, but Knights Emmitt Mosely and David Baety led an attack over the last four minutes of the half to give Southern Virginia a 23-22 advantage at the break.
With the Knights down 25-24 early in the second half, a Baety jumper gave the Knights momentum to make a run as he and guard Kevin Walker registered multiple jump shots and three-pointers over a five-minute span. Following a Justin Langford layup and Kyle Dragnich and-one, the Knights built a game-high 46-33 lead with 10 minutes remaining.
Newport gradually dug into the Knight lead to close out regulation, tying it up at 55 apiece on a clutch Mike Cherry free throw with three seconds remaining.
In overtime, a Dragnich layup and jumper put the Knights up 59-58 with 2:50 on the clock. CNU's Logan Miller made one free throw to tie it at 59 with 1:59. After the teams exchanged a pair of missed shots, Baety took hold on the final possession and was fouled with five seconds left, making one of two free throws. With 2.9 seconds on the clock, an errant CNU inbounds pass landed into the arms of the Knight defense to seal the win as fans rushed to court to celebrate the historic moment.
The Knights continue league play as they travel to Salisbury University for a Saturday afternoon matchup at 3 p.m. in Salisbury, Maryland.
