Men's Lacrosse Loses Another Close Game Versus Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.—Coming up on the short end of close games in prior weeks, the Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team again fell in its bid for a first victory as Methodist University prevailed, 13-12, Saturday afternoon at Monarch Stadium in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Tied at 12 with four minutes left in the game, the Monarchs' Justin Layden scored the game-winning goal with only 1:44 on the clock to lift Methodist to the win. Last week, the Knights fell at home to Hood College with under a minute left, marking the second straight game Southern Virginia has fallen in the final moments.

Freshman Sean Petersen led the way for the Knights with four goals on the afternoon on six shots to go with two ground balls. Anthony Good provided three goals for Southern Virginia while Russell Anderson and Casey Rich each provided a pair of scores. Rich also tallied six assists in the effort to lead the Knight attack.

Petersen struck first for the Knights nine seconds into the match as he attacked the net unassisted. Methodist tied it up on a Matt Layden score from Chris Lombardi. The Monarchs would grab a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

In man-up situations, the Knights scored their third and fourth goals midway through the second quarter by scores from R. Anderson and Petersen to tie it back up. Methodist went ahead 6-4 after a pair of goals before the Knights equalized the game at 6-6 going into halftime following scores from Good and sophomore Mike Bangerter.

With the game tied at seven apiece midway through the third quarter, the Knights scored three unanswered goals to go up 10-7 after goals from Petersen Good and Rich at the 8:52 mark. The Knights let the Monarchs back in late in the period as Methodist rattled off three quick strikes at the end of the third to go into the fourth stanza tied at 10.

Petersen scored three minutes into the fourth before Good scored 20 seconds later to put the Knights up, 12-10, with 11 minutes left. Methodist tied it at 12 following an unassisted goal from M. Layden.

Weather pending, Southern Virginia is slated to play at Bridgewater College Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Bridgewater, Virginia.
