BUENA VISTA, Va.—Some great hits by the Wasps and a lot of bad luck contributed to the Knights' 24th consecutive loss of the season as they fell to Emory & Henry College 17-3 in six innings.
The Knights (0-24, 0-14 CAC), who have finished conference play, leapt to an early lead in the bottom half of the first inning when Jamie Pinkston was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a MaKenzie Cox single, and scored on Keelie Gray hit through the left side.
Emory & Henry (22-9, 9-9 ODAC) was finally able to load the bases and score two runs in the top of the third, but the Knights quickly answered back and took another lead in the bottom half of the inning.
With one out centerfielder Katierose Helems reached first base on a throwing error by the thirdbaseman, advancing on the throw Helems slid into second base where she was safe from the ball, but not safe from injury. Her ankle seemed to have been sprained on the play, but she continued to play.
Helems advanced to third on a wild pitch and then was thrown out on a fielder's choice that allowed Cox to reach first. An Annie Biggs double would score Cox, and Biggs would later score on another error by the thirdbasemen before the side was retired.
With the shallow roster of only nine players and the NCAA rules which require nine players on defense, it was decided that Helems would play in the field, although she struggled to walk. The seemingly two and a half outfielders proved to be fatal for the Knights who gave up five runs in the fourth and 10 in the sixth to fall 17-3.
Those 15 runs came from eight hits, mainly to the outfield, and six errors from the Knights' defense.
Jamie Pinkston pitched well for the Knights only allowing four earned runs.
Game two of the originally scheduled double header was not played. Thursday's double header against Randolph-Macon has been cancelled.
