COVINGTON, Va.—The Southern Virginia University baseball team's losing streak extended to six games Monday evening as it fell to visiting Wesley College in a doubleheader by scores of 6-4 and 9-6, at Casey Field in Covington, Virginia.
Game One
In a tight first game where both teams combined for 21 hits, the Wolverines jumped out to a 4-0 lead off Knight starting pitcher Bradley Jackson. Wesley put up one run each in the first and second innings, then two in the third to take the lead.
Southern Virginia (5-16, 4-11 CAC) found its first run in the bottom of the fourth when first baseman Giovanni Prado hit an RBI double to bring in CJ Andrus, who has singled to start the inning off.
The Knights almost found another run on the very next play with runners on second and third when Kaleb Caplin put the ball into play, but Masen Fenn was thrown out at home trying to score from the Wesley College pitcher.
The Wolverines (10-12, 8-7 CAC) scored again in the sixth before the Southern Virginia offense tacked on three more runs—one in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth inning—making the score 5-4 in favor of Wesley.
In the seventh, both Knight hitters Hunter Allen and Ryan Saunders walked in consecutive plate appearances, then freshman outfielder Luke Smith doubled to right centerfield, bringing in both runners.
The following inning, Southern Virginia loaded the bases before Smith forced a walk from Wesley pitcher Rob Mills to give the Knights their final run of the game.
The Wolverines put up an unearned insurance run in the top of the ninth inning, and Southern Virginia was unable to score in the final at-bat.
Jackson (3-3) took the loss in the decision, giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out two in five innings of work.
Smith and Prado each finished 2-for-4 on the game, with Smith bringing in three of the Knights' four runs.
Game Two
The Wolverines started game two out strong as lead-off hitter Eric Speidel homered to begin the game. Wesley went on to take a 5-0 lead through six-and-a-half innings before Southern Virginia found its first run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Andrus reached on a fielder's choice as Knight designated hitter Wyatt Robledo scored off a throwing error, giving the Knights their first run.
Wesley put up three more runs in the eighth, taking an 8-1 lead before Southern Virginia responded with another run in the bottom half of the inning.
In an eventful ninth inning, the Wolverines managed to score one more run, then Southern Virginia threatened in its final at-bats.
The Knights had two homers in the inning—a solo shot by Smith, followed by a three-run homer by Prado. Looking for at least three more runs to tie up the game, Southern Virginia was unsuccessful as Caplin flied out to the center fielder to end the threat.
Knight starter Colin Bigelow (1-4) took the loss in the game, giving up five runs on six hits while striking out seven in 7.0 innings pitched.
Baseball is back in action tomorrow as it hosts non-conference ODAC opponent Emory and Henry College. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
