LEXINGTON, Va.—The Southern Virginia baseball team suffered a tough 5-3 loss to Washington and Lee University at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Thursday afternoon.
"I thought our pitchers were outstanding. We only gave up one earned run," head coach Logan Mann commented and then added, "We need to play better and cleaner defensively, which I believe will come with time and experience. It's a game we can and will learn from."
The Knights (2-3) battled evenly with the Generals (5-1), only trailing by one after the fifth inning. Washington and Lee took advantage in the sixth inning scoring three runs and taking the lead 4-0.
In the seventh inning Southern Virginia's Jordan Nase's earned an RBI with a single down the right side allowing freshman Tyler Olsen to score, putting the Knights on the scoreboard.
The Generals added a run in the eighth inning off of a Knight wild pitch.
Southern Virginia earned two more runs in the ninth inning as sophomore Ryan Saunders was walked with the bases loaded allowing Josh Hilburn to score. The Generals then walked Zach McNally sending freshman Cody Davis across for the run.
The Knights ended the game with eight hits and 10 players left on base. Marcus Begg and Kenneth Lane each doubled.
Junior pitcher Justin King faced 23 batters and only allowed three hits, four unearned runs, and a walk. Colin Bigelow, Gage Bigelow, and Seth Burris all saw time on the mound. Colin Bigelow recorded one stikeout.
