WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.—The Southern Virginia softball team traveled to North Carolina to play their season-opener against Shenandoah University falling in the double-header 11-2 and 11-0.
GAME ONE
After giving up three runs in the top of the first, the Knights (0-2) scored their first run of the season as junior Sarah Edwards recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the first, bringing Tara Hilton across the plate.
The Knights scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mollie Gabbert singled off of a bunt and Katierose Helems advanced home.
The Hornets (2-0) scored three runs in the first and third innings, one run in the sixth inning, and ended secured their win scoring four runs in the final inning.
Freshman Madison Muse pitched for the Knights, allowing five earned runs and striking out three.
GAME TWO
Hits were harder to come by in game two as the Knights allowed two five-run innings and only recorded three hits in the five-inning loss.
Freshman Alyssa Gastelum had her first collegiate double, and Rachael Moore and Gabbert had hits in game two.
Moore was in the circle for the Knights, recording two strikeouts and allowing seven earned runs.
Southern Virginia returns to action for a double header against Franciscan University on Saturday, February 27 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Covington, Virginia at the James River Sports Complex.
