LEXINGTON, Va.—Three homeruns helped the Southern Virginia baseball team topp Greensboro College 9-8 at Rockbridge County High School in the Knights' season-opening win on Tuesday.
The Knights (4-4) allowed two Greensboro (4-10) runs in the top of the first before getting on the board with a Josh Hillburn RBI double in the bottom of the second.
In the third inning the Pride scored a pair of runs before the Knights' Jordan Nase hit an RBI double to set up a three-run shot to center field from third basemen Marcus Begg. On the next pitch Craig Reeves homered over the left field fence to cap a five-run inning a tie the game at 6.
In his next at bat, after a Ryan Saunders sacrifice fly to score Cody Davis, Reeves hit a two-run home run in nearly the same spot, scoring the final two runs for the Knights.
Greensboro scored again in the fifth and eighth, but weren't able to regain the lead.
Sophomore Seth Burris earned the win for the Knights, relieving Colin Bigelow in the fourth inning and allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts.
"I'm very proud of Seth and the way he performed under pressure today," head coach Logan Mann said. "Overall we played well, getting the offense going and I'm pleased with the win. There are always things we can improve, and we'll work on them going forward."
The Knights play at Eastern Mennonite Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
