BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia men's lacrosse team won their second ever Capital Athletic Conference game in an overtime thriller where the Knights topped St. Mary's 17-16.
With 1.1 seconds on the clock sophomore Casey Rich put a shot in the back of the net from mid-field to tie the game at 16 and send it to overtime.
"I'm very proud of our players' effort today. We didn't play perfect, but we never quit," commented head coach Jason Lamb. "I'm happy these great guys can see the reward for their work. It's exciting to win in overtime and it's great to get our second ever win in the CAC."
The Knights (4-4, 2-2 CAC) led St. Mary's (2-5, 0-2 CAC) 9-6 at the intermission, but the Seahawks started the second half with four straight goals to take the lead. The game continued back and forth with St. Mary's final goal coming with 1:39 left in the fourth to take a one point lead.
It looked like that goal would be enough for the win, as the Seahawks had possession with 11 seconds left, but Mike Anderson and Rich forced a turnover, leaving just enough time for Rich to get off the game-tying shot.
Rich would then score the game winner 1:15 seconds into overtime on an assist from Payton Kimber.
Rich finished with five goals and three assists, while spencer Tunick added four goals and an assist. Zach Danneman, Anthony Good, and Kimber each added a pair of goals. Mike Bangerter and Brady Cook chipped in a goal a piece, and Cook recorded three assists.
In goal Ian Arave had 11 saves.
The Knights will host Randolph-Macon on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in a non-conference game at The Fields.
