LEXINGTON, Va.—Despite a six-run eighth inning by the Southern Virginia baseball team to cut No. 14 Christopher Newport's lead to one, the Captains outlasted the Knights 12-10 Wednesday afternoon.
The Captains (15-5, 5-2 CAC) jumped to an early lead with a five-run second, and led 11-3 after six innings. Southern Virginia (6-15, 2-5 CAC) scored in the fourth and fifth on RBIs from Ryan Saunders and Josh Hilburn and a solo homerun by Marcus Begg.
The Knights snagged one run in the seventh (Begg RBI single) before having a seven-hit, six-run inning that included a Saunders double and six singles. Hilburn recorded two RBIs on a single to centerfield. Begg, Jordan Keefer, Ryan Morin and Nick Carter also notched RBIs in the biggest rally of the season.
Christopher Newport scored one in the ninth to seal the deal and top the Knights 12-10.
Seth Burris picked up the loss in 4.2 innings. Jonathan Hodges and Colin Bigelow pitched relief.
Southern Virginia hosts York College of Pennsylvania in a double header on Saturday. Game one begins at 12 in Covington, Virginia.
