FREDERICKSBURG, Va.—The Southern Virginia baseball team earned a 7-6 victory at No. 12 University of Mary Washington on Wednesday.
"We had a great team win today," said head coach Logan Mann. "Everyone stepped up and did their part. If we can be consistant we should have a chance to win every game."
The Knights (5-7, 1-0 CAC) jumped to an early lead scoring three runs on three hits in the first half inning. They had another big inning in the fourth, scoring four runs off of four hits and a Mary Washington (13-3, 0-1) error.
The Eagles did take a 4-3 lead in the third inning, and later scored two in the bottom of the ninth, but the Knights were able to hold on to the win.
Sophomore right-hander Seth Burris earned his third win of the year with five innings on the mound, allowing just four runs. Sophomore Tayler Peterson earned his first save of the year.
Seven Knights had hits on the day, led by second baseman Jordan Nase who had three singles and an RBI. Marcus Begg and Ryan Morin also recored a pair of RBIs.
"This is a big win for us," Coach Mann continued,"it should give our team great confidence to begin CAC play like this."
The Knights take the field against Roanoke on Thursday before hosting a double-header with conference opponent Salisbury on Saturday, March 12 at 12 and 2:30 p.m. in Covington, Va.
