DOVER, Del.—The Southern Virginia baseball team was swept by Wesley College 10-4 and 9-6 in a conference double header on Saturday afternoon at Bob Reed Field.
"We hit the ball really well and played well offensively, but did not pitch like we needed to in order to win," head coach Logan Mann commented, "But, we are getting better each game and I am pleased with our progress and the way we fought the entire day."
Game One
In game one Wesley College (13-12, 7-5 CAC) got on the scoreboard first off of a sacrifice bunt to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Southern Virginia (7-19, 3-9 CAC) responded in the second bringing Ryan Saunders across the plate off Jordan Nase's RBI single to right field.
The Wolverines added three more runs to their lead, taking the score to 4-1 through the fifth.
Saunders earned a RBI triple in the sixth that allowed Davis Jones to score before Saunders scored on a Jordan Keefer RBI.
Wesley scored two runs in the seventh and Saunders hit his second triple of the day before scoring his third run of the game in the eighth off Cody Davis' RBI sacrifice fly.
The Wolverines sealed the victory in the eighth scoring four runs and taking game one 10-4.
Colin Bigelow pitched six innings and earned three strikeouts for the Knights Seth Burris also saw time on the mound.
Game Two
In game two Wesley College took an early 3-0 lead over the Knights through the fifth inning. Marcus Begg scored in the sixth putting the Knights on the scoreboard. The Wolverines scored four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh taking the lead 8-1.
Southern Virginia found momentum in the eighth when Brevin Baessler doubled allowing Begg and Josh Hilburn to score. Baessler added a run before Davis Jones scored off a Saunders RBI single, taking the score to 8-5.
The Wolverines sealed the victory scoring their last run in the bottom of the eighth. In the ninth Jordan Nase scored off a wild pitch, but the Knights fell short 9-6 in game two.
Baessler earned two RBIs and a double. Jones recorded an RBI and Begg recorded two doubles.
Jonathan Hodges pitched five innings allowing nine hits, five runs, and two walks. Justin King took the mound for two innings and earned two strikeouts with four hits, four runs, and two walks.
Southern Virginia travels to Christopher Newport University to continue conference play on Wednesday, April 6 at 3 p.m.
