NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Southern Virginia baseball team earned their second season win over a ranked team on Wednesday as they topped No. 14 Christopher Newport 10-5 on the road in the program's first ever win over the Captains.
"We played really well today, with a lot of energy and urgency," commented Knights' head coach Logan Mann, "CNU is a great team and we put it all together with solid pitching, offense and defense."
Seth Burris earned the win on the mound for Southern Virginia (8-19, 4-9 CAC) in six innings pitched, with Jonathon Hodges earning his first save of the season.
The Knights took an early 2-0 lead as Brevin Baessler and Ryan Saunders scored on a Davis Jones double. With runs in the second and third the Captains (21-9, 7-6 CAC) tied it up heading into the fourth, which turned out to be the Knights' biggest inning.
Gage Bigelow came across the plate from a Cody Davis single before Marcus Begg hit a three-run homerun over the left field wall scoring Davis and Saunders.
Begg recorded his fourth and fifth RBI on the day as he homered again in the sixth inning, a two-run shot that again scored Saunders. Later, Baessler would score on a Bigelow single to give the Knights a 9-2 lead.
Christopher Newport got three back in the bottom of the sixth, but a Nick Carter RBI single in the eighth would seal the deal for the Knights and a 10-5 victory.
"We need to use the momentum from today to continue to play well," Mann concluded.
Southern Virginia heads into some must-win games on Saturday (moved to Monday) at St. Mary's to keep any CAC playoff hopes alive.
