HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Southern Virginia University baseball team played three games at the Floyd B. Wilcox tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney University, winning the opening game 8-5 over Moravian before falling to the host team 15-1 and Stevenson 17-9.

Against Moravian (0-1) the Knights (5-9) scored three runs in the bottom of the first, one from a Zach McNally single, and two more from a passed ball.

Each team scored in the fourth inning, and the Knights added three more in the bottom of the fifth from a Cole Critchfield double and Jordan Keefer single. After Moravian cut into the lead with a four-run sixth, Southern Virginia added one more from a Josh Hilburn single, to secure the win.

Tanner Black, who relieved starter Tayler Peterson, earned his first win on the mound and had a strikeout.

In the second game Friday, the Knights snagged a single run in the sixth inning, from an Austen Hammond sacrifice fly, scoring McNally. Hampden-Sydney recorded 19 hits and 10 earned runs.

Saturday's game against Stevenson went eight innings, due to sunlight. Although the Knights led off the first with a run, Stevenson had an 11-run half inning.

Southern Virginia scored seven during the next four innings, but the Mustangs added six of their own. A late eighth-inning Knights' run made the final score 17-9.

Cole Critchfield tripled and recorded a pair of RBIs. Hilburn and Ryan Saunders also batted in two runs while McNally added three.

Defensively the Knights had three errors, resulting in 11 unearned runs.

Riley Daniels was tagged with the loss in 2.1 innings pitched.

Southern Virginia will head to Washington & Lee University on Wednesday, March 1. Game time is 4 p.m.
