BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University softball team earned their first win of the year with a 1-0 victory in game one of a double header against Roanoke College Thursday afternoon. The Knights fell 6-2 in game two.
The Knights' (1-7) run came in the bottom of the first inning. With a runner on, freshman short stop Mykayla Johnson (Frdericksburg, Va.) drilled a double to left field, bringing in Megan Harmon (Buena Vista, Va.) all the way from first, for the only score of the game, and Southern Virginia's only hit.
The run proved to be enough as the Knights locked down the defense, stranding Roanoke (3-1) players on base eight times, and ending three innings with a runner on third.
Harmon earned the win in the circle and recorded three strikeouts and six walks.
In game two, the Maroons (3-1) scored a run in the first inning to take an early lead. In the bottom of the third, Madison Rigby (Blackfoot, Idaho) scored on a Roanoke error. An inning later Mollie Gabbert (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled and later scored for the Knights only points of the game.
Roanoke scored three runs in the sixth inning to secure their win. Harmon and Rachael Moore each hit a double. Megan Stapley (Alpine, Utah) recorded one strikeout and four walks in the circle.
Southern Virginia hosts Bluefield College on Tuesday, March 7 at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. EST.
