BUENA VISTA, Va. – Spurred by shutout pitching and seven Tara Hilton RBIs, the Southern Virginia University softball team won their fifth and sixth straight games Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader against Mary Baldwin University.
Game one began with four and a half scoreless innings of solid defensive play. That ended, however, in the bottom of the fifth as the Knights' (7-11) Tara Hilton hit a three-run shot over the left field fence.
In the sixth inning, Southern Virginia added another pair of runs as a Rachel Moore triple scored Megan Stapely, followed by a Melanie Peyton RBI which scored Moore.
Megan Harmon threw a three-hitter and struck out six Fighting Squirrels (4-12).
The runs continued to come in the nightcap, as Tara Hilton got the Knights on the board in the first inning. In the second, Hilton doubled to left center scoring Heather Terranova and Mykayla Johnson to take a 3-0 lead.
Mollie Gabbert led off the bottom of the third with a double to center field. With one out, Moore launched a deep homerun over the left-field fence to score Gabbert. The Knights scored on a wild pitch before a Hilton double scored two more runs, and a Harmon single scored Hilton.
The nine-point lead was enough to end the game after five innings.
Harmon also pitched game two, earning the no-hit win with four strikeouts. She walked one batter.
Hilton finished with seven RBIs on the day, three doubles and a homerun. Moore added three RBIs with a triple and homerun.
The Knights host Capital Athletic Conference opponent Penn St.-Harrisburg on Saturday, March 25 at 1 and 3 p.m.
