NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team fell 14-8 to Christopher Newport in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament, in a repeat game from last year.
The Captains (11-5, 5-3 CAC) found the back of the net in the first minute of the game and continued to score, taking a 6-1 lead after the first quarter. The Knights (6-9, 3-6 CAC) answered with three goals in the second quarter and went into halftime down 4-8.
Southern Virginia started the second half on a 3-1 run to bring the game within two goals but the Captains scored five in a row to take a controlling seven-point lead, eventually securing their win.
Penalties were a problem for the Knights, leading to man-up Christopher Newport goals and missed opportunities.
Casey Rich and Anthony Good each recorded a hat trick to lead the Knights' attack. Shawn Lamb contributed a goal and two assists. Isaac DeGarlais scored one goal. Ryan Larsen and Logan Lund each .Christopher Newport outshot Southern Virginia 50-32. In goal, Ian Arave recorded 17 saves.
The Knights finished the 2017 season with their second appearance in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament and a 6-9 overall record.
