Baseball Takes Down No. 16 Roanoke College in Midweek Thriller

Box Score

By Sam Armstrong

SALEM, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team won its fifth straight game on Tuesday evening, upsetting No. 16 Roanoke College by a score of 3-2.

The Knights (6-3) struck first in the second inning as center fielder Brady Lamb singled home Tate Briggs, who had a base-hit earlier in the inning. The team continued the momentum into the third as freshman Caleb Layden tripled to left center and then was brought home by a Cole Critchfield infield single to give Southern Virginia a 2-0 advantage.

Lamb got things rolling for the Knights in the fifth with a single to left field, and then was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Nate McCallum, and moved to third on a groundout. Layden then singled to bring him home to extend the Knights lead to 3-0.

The Maroons (4-3) answered in the sixth with two runs to cut the lead to just one, but the Knights' pitching held Roanoke scoreless over the last three frames to come away with the victory.

Eight different pitchers helped in the winning effort, as the Maroons were held to just six hits in the game. Freshman Justin Davis started on the mound and pitched three solid innings, while Michael Stirling picked up the win and Seth Burris got the save.

Layden led the way for Southern Virginia with three hits and an RBI, while Lamb tallied two hits himself with an RBI. Also with hits for the Knights were Critchfield and Briggs.

The Knights will look to continue their winning ways on Friday as they travel to south to take on Emory & Henry. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
