Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team won its first Capital Athletic Conference matchup of the season Saturday afternoon 13-9 over Marymount University.
The Saints (2-7, 0-1 CAC) struck first with a pair of goals in the first five minutes. The Knights (7-3, 1-1 CAC) answered back with back-to-back goals of their own in a one-minute time span to knot the score at two.
In the second quarter, Southern Virginia outscored Marymount 4-2 to take a two-point lead at the half. Sophomore Shawn Lamb scored a pair of goals in the period.
The first nine minutes of the third quarter were all Marymount as the Saints went marching to four straight goals, regaining a lead of two. Less than 30 seconds after Marymount's eighth goal of the game, the Knights found an answer, ending Marymount's run and beginning what would be a 7-1 run with five straight goals to recapture the lead and the first CAC win of the year.
Shawn Lamb had a pair of goals in the third, including a behind-the-back shot that snuck past Marymount's keeper. He finished with four goals and a pair of assists. Tennison Schmidt was the only other Knight with multiple scores, finding the net twice in the contest. Seth Garff, who scored one goal in the first quarter, also dished two assists. Six other Knights scored.
Jace Thomas won over half of the faceoffs and scored just nine seconds into the fourth quarter after winning at the x.
Ian Arave earned his third win in goal, recording six saves.
The Knights will head to defending national champion Salisbury next Saturday. Gametime is 2 p.m.
