BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games to Guilford College on Wednesday, losing the first game 13-5 in extra innings and the second game 10-2.

After giving up one run in the top of the first, the Knights (2-8) had a big bottom half of the inning, scoring four runs on four hits. The Quakers (7-3) would answer by scoring single runs in the second and third, to which infielder Mykayla Johnson responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-3.

Guilford would tie it up in the fifth inning, and the game would remain tied after seven innings. The Quakers went on to score eight runs in the extra frame to take a commanding 13-5 lead, and the Knights were unable to score in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Junior Tara Hilton had a big game, tallying three hits with an RBI, while Madison Rigby had a pair of hits, and Mollie Gabbert drove in two runs on one hit.

Megan Harmon was in the circle for Southern Virginia, pitching all eight innings in the loss.

Game two of the day was a tight matchup until Guilford broke it open with another big inning in the fifth, scoring six runs to end the game 10-2.

The Knights scored both of their runs in the first inning on singles from Jordan Stites and Hilton. Sophomore Melanie Peyton was the starting pitcher, giving up 10 runs (five earned) over five innings.

Southern Virginia will look to bounce back on Friday as they take on Wilson College. Game one starts at 3:00 p.m. at Harvey-Dryden Field.
