Softball Completes Sweep of Wilson with Walk-off Squeeze

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University softball team completed a two-game sweep of Wilson College Friday evening at Harvey-Dryden Field, shutting out the Phoenix 3-0 in game one, before walking off in the eighth inning of game two 10-9 on a game-ending squeeze bunt.

With Megan Harmon in the circle in game one, the Knights (4-8) allowed just five hits, and had nine of their own in the 3-0 win. Two of the three runs came in the first inning as Harmon and Jordan Stites scored on a Mollie Gabbert double. The Knights final run came from Tara Hilton in the third inning, batted in by Mykayla Johnson

Southern Virginia only allowed five hits in game one, and Harmon struck out four.

In game two, the Knights jumped to a first-inning lead with a Madison Rigby double that scored Harmon, but Wilson (1-5) answered back with a seven-run second. Southern Virginia cut the lead by three in the third, and added another run in the fourth to cut the lead to a single run.

After both teams scored in the fifth and the Phoenix snagged one in the seventh, the Knights found themselves trailing by two in the last frame.

With one out, catcher Heather Terranova doubled to deep left center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Harmon hit a sacrifice fly to the left fielder, bringing Terranova across.

Trailing by one with two outs, Rigby took a two-strike pitch to deep left field for a standing double. On the next two-strike pitch, Melanie Peyton singled up the middle, bringing Rigby home to force an extra inning.

Despite having a runner placed on second as the international tiebreaker, the Knights were able to lock down the defense and keep the Phoenix from scoring in the eighth. Mollie Gabbert led off the eighth inning for the Knights, laying down two foul bunts in an attempt to advance Tara Hilton to third base. Even with two strikes, Gabbert was given the bunt sign and laid down a perfect bunt to the third baseman, advancing the runner.

With the winning run at third, first-year head coach Tiffane Pendleton again opted for the bunt, this time by MyKayla Johnson, who completed the squeeze play and brought home the winning run.

Harmon, who pitched the seventh and eighth in relief of Melanie Peyton, earned her second win of the day.

The Knights will look to use the momentum on Saturday in a doubleheader against Cairn on Harvey-Dryden Field at 12 and 2 p.m.
