Box Score STAUNTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University softball team won its fourth straight game Wednesday afternoon in a 12-4 non-conference triumph over Mary Baldwin University.
The Knights (13-16) got on the board in the opening inning, as Tara Hilton scored on a Jordan Stites double to center. In the bottom half of the first, the Fighting Squirrels (1-28) got on the board with a two-run homer to take a lead.
Southern Virginia answered back in the second with a pair of runs, coming on RBIs from Madison Rigby and Heather Terranova. The scoring continued in the third inning as a Bethanie Hudson single scored Mollie Gabbert and Katierose Helems groundout scored Hudson and Caitlin Barber.
Mary Baldwin capitalized on a Southern Virginia error to score two in the third but was only able to get two runs. After another Stites RBI in the fourth scoring Megan Harmon, the Knights had a five-run fifth to secure an eight-point margin and end the game after five innings.
Scoring in the fifth frame consisted of a Rigby RBI double, two RBIs from Terranova, and a two-run homer from Gabbert.
Harmon earned her tenth win of the season in the circle striking out five batters.
The Knights will play host to Salisbury University and Wesley College on Friday and Saturday. Friday's doubleheader against the Sea Gulls begins at 2 p.m. at Harvey-Dryden Field.
