NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Southern Virginia University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Friday to No. 11 Christopher Newport, falling 11-0 in the first game and 5-1 in game two.
In game one, the Captains (28-6, 11-1 CAC) scored all 11 of their runs in the first three innings to take the win over the Knights (14-20, 3-8 CAC) in just five innings.
Heather Terranova, Tara Hilton, Jordan Stites, and Bethanie Hudson each had a hit for Southern Virginia as the team struggled to find holes in the Captains' defense. Megan Harmon was in the circle for the Knights, pitching four innings and giving up seven earned runs.
Game two was a close matchup that took all seven innings to decide a winner as Christopher Newport took the 5-1 victory.
The game was scoreless until the Captains scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Knights responded in the next frame as Stites doubled to bring home Hilton, but they were unable to score for the rest of the game in the loss.
Senior Mollie Gabbert took the circle for her first pitching appearance of the season and tossed a great game, allowing no earned runs and only six hits to the powerful Captain lineup.
The Knights finish up their season on Saturday as they take on Mary Washington in a twin bill on Saturday. Game one will start at 12:00 p.m. in Fredericksburg, Va.
