FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Playing in its last two games of the year the Southern Virginia University softball team took on the University of Mary Washington, falling in game one 10-0, and dropping the second game 5-1 in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The Knights (14-23, 3-11 CAC) were nearly no-hit in the first game, with Heather Terranova and Tara Hilton finishing with the only base-hits against the Eagles' (16-21-1, 5-8-1 CAC) Kara Deppe, who is second in the CAC in ERA, wins, and strikeouts.
Mollie Gabbert pitched well and only gave up one run in the first two innings of play, but the Eagles found their rhythm and ended up scoring nine runs in the third and fourth innings to give themselves the victory.
Gabbert took the loss in the circle, while Megan Harmon pitched one and one-third innings in relief.
The Knights looked to bounce back in game two, scoring a run in the top of the first off of a wild pitch, but they were unable to push any more runs across for the rest of the game. The Eagles answered the Knights' run with two of their own in the bottom of the first, and then three more in the fifth to wrap up the scoring.
Hilton had two more hits in the game, while Madison Rigby had two hits and a stolen base, and Katierose Helems had a base-hit.
