Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. — Southern Virginia women's volleyball completed the sweep against St. Mary's (Md.) by the score of 25-19, 25-16, 25-17 Tuesday night.
Serving was the shining aspect for the Knights (15-11) tying their season record in service aces with 16. Freshman Courtney Singleton had a season-high six service aces, and freshman Emma Steiger added four of her own.
Junior Kaely Rath dominated at the net with a game-high eight kills and a .286 hitting average. Elle Warnick dished out a game-high ten assists, and senior Mykynli Knight kept the defense grounded with 13 digs.
The first set could not have started any better for Southern Virginia. Singleton used three of her six service aces to elevate the Knights to a quick 3-0 lead. Later in the set, Steiger also added three aces of her own to build a large enough lead to win the set.
In set two, the Knights continued its impressive performance. The Seahawks (5-20) kept it close trailing by one midway through the set before Southern Virginia outscored St. Mary's 10-3 to cruise to another set win.
The Knights did not let up in the third set. They established a 15-4 lead before the Seahawks looked to come back. Southern Virginia used a final kill from McKaye Cunningham and one last service ace from Kylee Christensen to complete the sweep.
Southern Virginia outhit the Seahawks in each set and average one of their best hitting performances of the season at a .240 clip.
The Knights host their final home game of the regular season on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. against Roanoke.
