Knights Drop Final Game to Hornets at Shenandoah Shootout

WINCHESTER, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team fell short in its final game at the Shenandoah Shootout against the host Shenandoah University, falling 87-77 Saturday night.

Sam Armstrong led the Knights' (1-13) offense with a team-high 17 points (5-for-12) and three assists while freshman Calvin Seamons netted a career-high 16 points (6-for-11) to anchor the Southern Virginia bench. The trio of Trey Dill, George Howe, and Brycen Harris each broke into double digits scoring ten apiece. Kimball Cottam led the team on the glass with six rebounds to go along with eight points. Christopher Chaney led the Hornets (4-7), recording a game-high 27 points.

The Hornets opened the first three minutes of the first half with a 6-0 lead before Quentin Acree put the Knights on the board with a jumper at the 17:00 mark. Southern Virginia tied the game 19-19 with 8:34 left in the half on a Harris layup before claiming their first lead of the game nearly a minute later on a Dill three (22-21). The Knights built its most significant lead of the game after an Armstrong three (27-21) with 5:54 in the half. The last five minutes of the half resulted in back-and-forth play. The Hornets headed into the half leading by three (40-37) after a costly Southern Virginia turnover allowed a Shenandoah three with two seconds remaining.

Shenandoah held the upper hand shooting 50 percent (13-for-26) from the floor compared to the Knights 43.8 percent (14-for-32). Southern Virginia outshot the Hornets 53.3 percent (8-for-15) to 37.5 percent (3-for-8) from deep. Armstrong led the Knights with 12 points while Chaney paced the Hornets also with 12.

In the second half, SU quickly extended its lead to double digits (51-41) following an 11-4 run with 17:34 left. After trailing by their most significant margin (58-44) at 13:53, the Knights battled their way back, cutting the deficit to five (65-61) with 6:59 remaining in the game. Southern Virginia's comeback efforts were halted after timely buckets by the Hornets guiding them to the 87-77 win.

For the game, Southern Virginia held the advantage from behind the arc 42.3 percent (11-for-26) to 40 percent (6-for-15) and outscored the Hornets bench 39-24. Shenandoah edged the Knights in the rebounding battle (29-26), points off turnovers (23-18), and 2nd chance points (13-12).

Armstrong was named to the all-tournament team following his performance over the weekend. 

The Knights return to action Tuesday, Jan. 7, as they will travel to play William Peace at 7 p.m.
