Knights Downed 8-6 in Crosstown Matchup

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team fell 8-6 on the road to Washington and Lee University Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Knights (1-1) surrendered five runs in the first inning to the Generals (4-0) on five hits.

Southern Virginia scored their first run in the second inning when Ryan Morin tripled to center field scoring Bridger Taylor with the Generals still leading 5-1.

The Knights continued to chip away at the deficit in the fourth inning with Canon Anderson scoring on a wild pitch. Mitch Tyse then doubled to center bringing home Morin to make the score 5-3 Washington and Lee still leading.

In the fifth inning, the Knights came back to tie the game at five after Cole Critchfield hit into a fielder's choice and a poor throw allowed Jordan Nase to score. Taylor followed was the next batter and doubled to left field scoring Caleb Layden.

The Generals responded to the Knights comeback regaining the lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Southern Virginia scored their last run of the game in the sixth inning on a Layden single scoring Hunter Blunt.

Washington and Lee scored one more run in the eighth inning to make the final score 8-6.

The Knights threw four pitchers with Riley Daniels being handed the loss.

Southern Virginia plays next at the Ty Cobb Classic Friday, Feb. 22 where they will face Moravian and Keystone at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
