Knights Splits Second Day at Mountain Mash Tournament in Roanoke

SALEM, Va. — The Southern Virginia University softball team completed the final day at the Mountain Mash Tournament spitting their games 1-1 with a 3-2 loss to Pitt.-Bradford and a victory over Wilson 4-3.

In the first game, the Knights (2-7) the Knights struck first on a Mykayla Johnson double scoring Megan Harmon and Heather Terranova giving the Knights an early 2-0 lead.

The Panthers (1-3) cut into the Knights lead in the second inning scoring on a double to bring the score 2-1 in favor of Southern Virginia.

The next two innings both teams were scoreless, in the top of the fifth, the Panthers tied the game 2-2. The following inning Pitt.-Bradford scored what would be the winning run in the top of the sixth with the Panthers beating the Knights 3-2.

The Knights totaled six hits for the game with Johnson leading the way with a pair of hits and two RBI's, Terranova, Harmon, Tara Hilton, and Airin Lara also collected a hit.

Freshman Krystal Kemp started for the Knights recording a season-high seven strikeouts in the loss.

In the second game, the Knights once again by way of a Harmon double that scored Terranova who previously reached base on a leadoff double. The second run of the inning came off a Kemp fly ball that resulted in an error that would bring Harmon home to take a 2-0 advantage.

Wilson College fought back in the middle innings scoring three runs combined in the third and fourth innings to take a 3-2 lead.

The Southern Virginia offense responded in the bottom of the fifth scoring a run to tie the game at three from a Kemp double.

The Knights waited until the bottom of the seventh to score on a walk-off single from Harmon on a hit to the shortstop that would score Matea Manuleleua to seal the game 4-3.

Southern Virginia recorded a season-high eight hits with Harmon, Terranova, and Johnson each with multiple hits.

Harmon started for the Knights going four innings and collecting three strikeouts. Kemp came in relief of Harmon and finished with three innings a pair of strikeouts and the win.

The Knights will play next in their home-opener Friday, Mar. 8 at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. against Franciscan.
