Box Score ST. MARY'S, Md. – The Southern Virginia University baseball team snapped its two-game skid on Friday afternoon, defeating conference foe St. Mary's College of Maryland by a score of 7-3.
The Knights (10-7, 2-4 CAC) didn't wait long to get on the board, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Cole Critchfield got things started with an RBI single, after which Ryan Morin smoked a double down the left field line for two more runs, and Brady Lamb finished the frame off with an RBI single to left field.
Lamb wasn't done yet, however, as he hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score a run in the third inning, after which Morin scored on an error. In the fourth, Caleb Layden blasted a solo shot to right center, giving Southern Virginia a 7-0 lead.
The Seahawks (5-12-1, 0-6 CAC) attempted to mount a comeback in scoring a run each in the fifth, sixth, and eighth innings, but the Knights were able to close it out for the win.
Layden, Critchfield, Morin, Lamb, and Canon Anderson led the Knights lineup with two hits each, while Lamb and Morin each had two RBIs.
Jonny Soto started the game on the mound for Southern Virginia and pitched an excellent game, throwing six innings and giving up only two runs while striking out four.
The Knights and Seahawks will continue the series on Saturday. Game one of the doubleheader will begin at 12:00 p.m. in St. Mary's, Maryland.
