Baseball Gets First CAC Sweep of Season Over Seahawks

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The Southern Virginia University baseball away this weekend completing a sweep of the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks after winning both games in today's doubleheader 11-6 game one and 3-2 game two.

Game one featured offense by both teams combining for 17 runs on 31 hits.

The Knights (12-7, 4-4 CAC) scored a pair in the opening inning of the game from a Bridger Taylor double to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

Southern Virginia tacked on four more runs in the top of the third after Taylor added two more RBI's on a single followed by Mitch Tyse and Brady Lamb singles scoring two more runs with the Knights leading 6-0.

The Seahawks ( 5-14-1, 0-9 CAC) scored a run in both the third and fourth innings to trim the Knights lead 6-2.

The Knights biggest inning came in the fifth when they tallied five runs to reach their largest lead of the game 11-2.

St. Mary's (Md.) scored four more runs but could not overcome the Knights large lead, falling 11-6.

Taylor led the Knights going 3-5 with a four RBI's. Lamb ended the game with two RBI's while Tyse and Caleb Layden also recorded an RBI. Cole Critchfield also had a strong game going 3-5.

Mike Stirling was on the mound for the Knights picking up the win going five innings.

In game two, the Knights scored in the top of the third on Jordan Nase singling scoring Owen Green.

The Seahawks tied the game at one apiece in the bottom of the fourth.

Southern Virginia was held scoreless for the next three innings until the top of the seventh. Koby Hill came up big for the Knights with a pinch-hit that gave the Knights the 2-1 lead.

In the top of the eighth, Anderson hit a sacrifice fly into right field scoring Critchfield to increase the lead to 3-1.

St. Mary's (Md.) made a final push in the bottom of the ninth to bring them within one and but the Knights defense once again seal the game, winning 3-2.

The Knights totaled seven hits with Anderson as the only Knight with multiple hits in the game.

Jaxon Newbold collects the win, pitching 7.1 innings allowing one run and picking up four strikeouts.

Southern Virginia returns home to face Penn St.-Harrisburg Friday, April 5 at 3:30.
