Knights Split Doubleheader Against Captains and Eagles

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team split their games Wednesday afternoon, falling 16-9 to No. 2 Christopher Newport in game one and then defeating The University of Mary Washington 2-0 in game two.

The Knights (13-12, 4-9) jumped out against the Captains (28-4, 15-2) in the bottom of the first inning on a Bridger Taylor three-run homer to take an early 3-0 lead. 

In the second inning, Jordan Nase recorded a two-run RBI single to right field to give the Knights the 5-0 lead. Two batters later, Cole Critchfield brought Nase home on a single to center field again extending the lead 6-0. Taylor continued his strong play with his second hit of the day scoring a run to take a commanding 7-0.

The Knights tallied two more runs by way of a wild pitch that scored Critchfield and then a Jonny Soto single for the 9-0 lead after two innings.

After three innings of scoreless baseball, the Captains bats warmed up scoring two runs in each of the next three innings while shutting out the Knights at the plate to now trail 9-6.

The Knights entered the top of the eighth inning still leading 9-6 when Christopher Newport's offense exploded scoring 10 runs to lead Southern Virginia 16-9 heading into the final inning.

The huge eighth inning of the Captains doomed the Knights as they were shutout in the ninth, suffering the 16-9 defeat.

Southern Virginia tallied 11 hits with Caleb Layden leading the team with three hits.

Riley Daniels is handed the loss on the mound while Brian Owens of the Captains picks up the win.

In the second game, the Knights (14-12, 5-9) relied on the defense and pitching.

The Knights' first run of the game came from a sacrifice fly to left field hit by Mitch Tyse that scored Canon Anderson for the 1-0 lead.

The following inning, Ryan Morin recorded a RBI single to left field to extend the Knights lead 2-0.

Jonny Soto starred for the Southern Virginia on the mound throwing recording a complete game while blanking the Eagles (11-20, 4-13)
in nine innings allowing just three hits and picking up four strikeouts.

The Knights recorded seven hits with Taylor and Nase each with two.

Southern Virginia will now head to Salisbury, Maryland to face the Sea Gulls in a three-game series April 26-27 beginning Friday at 3:30 p.m.
