Softball Splits Opening Round of CAC Tournament, Play Continues Monday

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University softball team in their first appearance in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament continued play after splitting games Saturday afternoon with a loss to The University of Mary Washington 8-4 and a victory over York College (Pa.) 3-2.

The Knights (10-29, 3-10) fell behind in the bottom of the first inning 1-0 on an Eagles (20-16, 10-3) RBI single.

In the top of the second, Southern Virginia scored three runs on the bat of Heather Terranova who hit her third homer of the season, giving the Knights the 3-1 lead.

The Eagles totaled four runs in the bottom of the third and then three runs in the fourth to retake the lead 8-3.

It was not until the top of the sixth that the Knights scored again, Bethanie Hudson hit her first home run of the season making the score 8-4 with the Eagles still in front.

The Knights were held scoreless in the final inning suffering an 8-4 loss.

Southern Virginia recorded six hits, reached base by way of a walk once and left six runners on base.

In the second game, the Knights faced the Spartans (23-18) with the season potentially ending with a loss.

Southern Virginia trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth when a costly error allowed Tara Hilton and Sydney Dolan to score, tying the game at 2-2.

With the game tied 2-2, the Knights had last at-bats and freshman Matea Manuleleu led off with a single up the middle. Manuleleu then got herself in scoring position by stealing second. The Spartans got the next two batters out with senior Tara Hilton at the plate. Hilton hit a walk-off single to right field scoring Manuleleu from second earning the Knights the programs first-ever postseason win in the Division III era.

Megan Harmon picked up the win in the circle pitching five innings, giving up four hits, two runs and collecting three strikeouts.

With the win, each team split their opening round matchups of the CAC Tournament that will now call for an addition game that will be on Monday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m. against York College (Pa.) in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
