Knights Swept by Sea Gulls

SALISBURY, Md. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team dropped their series against No. 10 Salisbury University falling in both games of the doubleheader, losing game one 14-9 and game two 7-2.

The Knights (14-14, 5-11) in the first game trailed 1-0 after the first inning. After four scoreless innings, Southern Virginia generated six runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan Morin started for the Knights hitting a solo home run . Caleb Layden and Cole Critchfield each followed with RBI singles and then Bridger Taylor hit a three-run homer to right field to take a 6-1 lead.

The Sea Gulls (31-6-1, 18-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth cutting into the Knights lead with the score now 6-4.

Southern Virginia extended their lead this time from Jordan Nase with the team's second three-run homer of the game leading now 9-4.

Salisbury reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth as they rallied back scoring six runs to lead 10-9.

Two innings later the Sea Gulls increased their lead scoring four more runs. The Knights were shutout in the last three innings allowing the Sea Gulls to maintain the lead and win the game 14-9.

Nase led the Knights with three hits while Jonny Soto and Matt Phillips each collected a pair of hits.

In game two, the Knights scored their only runs of the game in the top of the first inning when Cole Critchfield launched a two-run shot for his third homer of the season.

A strong third and fifth innings for the Sea Gulls created an insurmountable lead for the Knights as the Knights were shut out for the remainder of the game falling 7-2.

Critchfield, Riley Daniels, Austin Forsyth, Canon Anderson, and Jonny Soto each collected a hit for the Knights in the loss.

Jaxon Newbold is handed the lost going 4.1 innings allowing seven runs on 10 hits.

The Knights play their last conference series of the season against Frostburg State Tuesday, April 30 at 4:00 p.m. in Covington, Virginia.
