Box Score 2 DANVILLE, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team wrapped up their second day of tournament play at the 25th Annual Cougar Classic hosted by Averett University breaking even on the day with a 2-3 loss against Bob Jones University and a 3-2 win against Averett University.
In the first match of the day against Bob Jones University, the Knights (1-2) were able to come back midway through the first set after scoring four consecutive points. Southern Virginia never looked back as they maintained their lead throughout and eventually took a convincing 25-15 win.
The roles reversed in the second set as Bob Jones (3-1) was now able to mirror two wins in sets two and three. The Knights made it tough for Bob Jones as they came within two points of the Bruins in each set before Bob Jones was able to secure each win.
The fourth featured Southern Virginia firing on all cylinders as the Knights forced a fifth set. The Knights secured a 25-20 win led by Kylee Christenson registering six kills.
In the fifth set, the Knights were down by five points before making a run to get within one at 13-14 before Bob Jones secured the set and the game 3-2.
Junior Kaely Rath led the Knights with 20 kills and a .275 hitting average along with freshman Kylee Christenson contributing 14 kills along with a game-high 26 digs. Senior LaRee Crockett had a game-high 42 assists while junior Taryn warner had a game-high four blocks.
The second game of the day took similar fashion to that of the first as Southern Virginia University entered into another five-set match against Averett.
The first set of the match saw great action and rallies from both teams. The Knights (2-2) were able to secure a win off a kill from Junior Kaely Rath in the first set after they scored three consecutive points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
After taking a seven-point lead midway through the second set, Southern Virginia and Averett (0-3) exchanged blows throughout the set. The Knights were relentless as they were able to hold off the Cougars with a solid 25-21 win, extending their lead to 2-0 in the match.
The Cougars stood their ground as they were able to rattle off two set wins and force the match into a fifth set.
The best set was saved for last as both teams exchanged leads throughout the set. Southern Virginia was able to capitalize on two crucial errors by Averett to secure their victory 3-2.
Junior Kaely Rath and freshman Kylee Christenson led the game with thirteen and twelve kills apiece. Ryan Dubinsky, Taryn Warner, and Lindsay Wiedrich each added five kills respectively. LaRee Crockett had a game-high 32 assists, and senior Mykynli Knight added 24 digs to lead the way for the Knights. Junior Taryn Warner rounded off the day with a game-high six blocks.
Southern Virginia looks to their next opponent as they return home to take on Emory and Henry on Sept. 3 inside Knight Arena at 7 p.m.
