Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. — On the first day of Capital Athletic Conference play, Southern Virginia (11-4) completed the sweep over Salisbury University (11-4) 25-22, 27-25, 25-13.
Junior Ryan Dubinsky played a crucial role in the Knights' victory having the highest hitting average out of both teams with .267.
"I am happy with the fact that we came out strong in the first set," said Head Coach Debby Baker. "Coming out strong is something we have lacked all season, but the team was able to do a great job executing our game plan."
The first set showcased Southern Virginia setting the tone that carried them for the entire match. The Knights were able to establish a healthy lead going up by nine points midway through the set. Salisbury scored six consecutive points to come within two, but an attacking error would give the set to Southern Virginia.
Set two consisted of back-and-forth play with multiple lead changes. The Knights would outscore the Seagulls 7-3 to come within the set point, but Salisbury would come back and force extra points. Kills from junior Lindsay Wiedrich and freshman Kylee Christensen would propel Southern Virginia to another set win.
The Knights saved their most dominant set for last going up by 11 points towards the end of the set. A final kill from Kylee Christensen and attacking error on Salisbury would finalize the sweep for Southern Virginia.
Freshman Courtney Singleton had a game-high ten kills. Senior Mykynli Knight and freshman Kylee Christensen would share the game-high digs with 19 apiece. Elle Warnick would lead the night in assists with 29, and Taryn Warner dominated at the net with seven blocks on the night.
Southern will play Christopher Newport on Wednesday, October 2nd at 7 p.m.
