Box Score 2 BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Mont Alto Saturday afternoon, earning a 7-0 win in game one and a 9-5 victory. With the wins, the Knights are 6-2 on the young season while the Lions are 0-4.
Jonny Soto collects the win in the first contest tossing five scoreless innings, allowing two hits, one walk, and a pair of Ks. Will Sprague came in relief tossing a scoreless inning in the sixth while picking up one strikeout. Freshman Will Parker closed out the game tossing the final inning, allowing one hit, one walk, and one punch out.
Tyler Moreland suffered the loss for Penn St.-Mont Alto, allowing six runs on four hits with five walks and a strikeout.
Southern Virginia jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first frame on a Canon Anderson single to centerfield that scored Jackson Massey from third and Cole Critchfield from second base. Massey started the inning with a leadoff walk followed by a Critchfield single. The next batter, Mitch Tyse, hit a two-run shot over the centerfield fence to carry the lead to 4-0.
After a quick 1,2,3 on defense, Southern Virginia exhibited patience at the plating drawing a leadoff walk from Cole Campanile, followed by a Massey double. Critchfield then hit into a sacrifice fly that scored Cole Campanile from third. The Lions walked the next three batters in Koby Hill, Bridger Taylor, and Anderson scoring Massey. The Knights ended the second frame extending the lead 6-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Anderson drew his second walk of the game and then advanced to second and third bases on an error and a wild pitch. Tyse again came through lacing a single to score Anderson from third for the 7-0 lead.
Offensively, the Knights totaled eight hits, getting multiple base knocks from Tyse (two) and Massey (two). Tyse and Anderson combined for six of the seven Southern Virginia runs.
Southern Virginia started game two scoring again in its first at-bats. After back-to-back singles from Soto and Critchfield, Will Parker hit into a fielder's choice advancing Soto to third. Bridger Taylor then flew out to center scoring Soto from third for the game's first run.
The Knights continued into the third frame, Critchfield recorded his second hit of the game with a double to center to get into scoring position. Taylor then tallied his second RBI of the game, picking up a single to score Critchfield. Anderson continued the momentum with another double placing two runners in scoring position. Tyse extended his great day at the plate with a double scoring both Taylor and Anderson to now hold a 3-0 lead. Southern Virginia snagged one more run before the end of the inning on a Lion error scored Tyse to claim a 4-0 advantage.
At the top of the fourth, the Lions responded with their first runs of the game coming on a two-run homer from Chayse Fisher, making the score now 4-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth and two runners on following singles from Soto and Taylor, Anderson ripped a shot for a triple scoring both runners to own a 7-2 lead. Tyse second consecutive multiple-hit game of the day with a single scoring Anderson to lead 8-2.
Penn St.-Mont Alto added two more runs in the next two innings, cutting the deficit to four, 8-4.
Southern Virginia scored its last run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a passed ball that allowed the Knights' Anderson to score. The Lions threatened in the final inning of play, scoring a run before the Southern Virginia defense closed out the game to earn the 9-5 victory.
Riley Daniels notched his second win of the season, surrendering three runs (no earned) on four hits, three walks, and five strikeouts. Coming in relief for Daniels were Zach Zalar and Paul Steiger combining for two innings, two runs, three hits, and two punch outs.
Matt Huston earns the loss in 3.2 innings of work, allowing 12 hits, eight runs (seven earned), and four strikeouts.
Southern Virginia collected 13 hits in the second contest, with five players registering multiple base knocks (Anderson/3, Critchfield/2, Soto/2, Taylor/2, and Tyse/2).
The Knights hit the road for a single-game matchup at Hampden-Sydney Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 3 p.m.
