Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — The Southern Virginia University baseball team fell on the road Wednesday night, 3-0, to Hampden-Sydney College at Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium.
The Tigers (5-3) scored the games only runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking a 3-0 lead and never looked back. Josh Duimstra doubled to get a runner in scoring position, then Andrew Kasiski singled to left to score Duimstra from second to claim a 1-0 lead. Kasiski went on to steal second and eventually score on a wild pitch to extend the Tiger lead 2-0. Chase Counts drew a walk and advanced to third on two wild pitches before Matt Spanolo singled to left, scoring Counts holding the 3-0 advantage.
Jonathan Triesler earned the win after his eight scoreless frames, where he surrendered just three hits and nine strikeouts. Bradford Webb collected his second save of the season, giving up one hit and earning one punch out in one inning of work.
Jonny Soto suffered the loss allowing, three runs on five hits, one walk, and one strikeout. Will Parker came in for the Knights out of the bullpen (6-3) throwing five scoreless innings allowing four hits, one walk, and three Ks.
Southern Virginia threatened to score in the third inning following a leadoff double to left from Riley Daniels and then a single from Cole Campanile. Manny Lara grounded out but managed to advance both runners into scoring position with Daniels on third and Campenile on second. The Knights were unable to capitalize on the opportunity as the Tigers put out the next two batters.
The Knights had one more chance in the game the following inning at the top of the fourth with two outs. Canon Anderson reached first after being hit by the pitch, and a Mitch Tyse single to left field advanced Anderson to second. Once more, Hampden-Sydney shut down the scoring opportunity picking up the third out via fielder's choice.
Southern Virginia totaled four hits on the day off the bats of Daniels, Campanile,Tyse, and Bridger Taylor.
For the Tigers, Kasiski, Nick Grohowski, and Ryan Boyce each recorded multiple hits on the night.
The Knights now prepare for a doubleheader at home against Penn State York on Saturday, Feb. 29 starting at 1:30 p.m.
